Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) serves as a crucial tool for mobilizing grassroots support globally in the Palestinian liberation struggle against Israel’s settler-colonialism and apartheid. Central to the IAW is the BDS campaign, which aims to highlight the complicity of entities funding and investing in the Zionist settler project and the genocide inflicted upon the Palestinian people. By spotlighting these connections, the IAW seeks to escalate pressure on these entities and strengthen solidarity with the Palestinian cause on a global scale.
Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) is a Palestinian-led movement that functions as a vital tool in resisting Israel’s settler colonialism, apartheid, and occupation over the Palestinian people and their land. Upholding the principle that Palestinians deserve the same rights of freedom, dignity, and self-determination as the rest of humanity, BDS seeks to end international support for Israel’s oppression of Palestinians.
This year’s IAW comes at a time when Israel is carrying out a full-on, televised genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza. Over 70,000 tons of explosives have been dropped on the besieged Gaza Strip since October 7, killing more than 40,000 Palestinians, nearly 10,000 of whom were buried alive under the rubble of their destroyed homes, and injuring more than 72,000 people.
While companies, organizations, and institutions continue to fund and invest in the ongoing genocide, and international fast food chains supply the Israeli occupation army with free meals, Israel is deliberately starving the 2.3 million population of the Gaza Strip, especially in the north, where 700,000 Palestinians are subjected to a stifling blockade that has already led to severe famine. Meanwhile, the occupation prevents the entry of aid, food, and essentials, and bombs the aid trucks that make it into these areas, committing massacres against the starved Gazans waiting for food after months of consuming animal feed.
On January 26, the International Court of Justice found that Israel is plausibly perpetuating genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza. While this did not deter Israel from continuing its genocide against the Palestinians, and did not stop it from targeting hospitals, schools, journalists, places of worship, infrastructure, carrying out systematic starvation, and committing horrific massacres, BDS Austria calls on you to participate widely in the activities of the IAW and to escalate the popular pressure on those complicit in the genocide and hold them accountable.
