Es ist an der Zeit, die Salzburger Festspiele an das Ethos ihrer Gründer zu erinnern.
Während sich heute, am 26. Juli 2025, die politische und finanzielle Elite des Landes in
der Felsenreitschule einfindet und die Festspielsaison feierlich eröffnet, stehen
palästinensische Kinder in Gaza vor dem Hungertod. Bundespräsident Alexander Van der
Bellen und die österreichische Bundesregierung sehen nach bald zwei Jahren Genozid
immernoch tatenlos zu, wie die israelische Armee tagtäglich Zivilist:innen ermordet und die
Einfuhr von Hilfsgütern nach Gaza blockiert. Die Festrednerin Anne Applebaum spricht
über „Demokratie und Musikfestspiele“, aber schweigt über Israels dokumentierte Angriffe
auf Journalist:innen, Ärzt:innen und Rettungskräfte. Die Firma Siemens, einer der
Hauptsponsoren der Festspiele, beteiligt sich mit Infrastrukturprojekten an der illegalen
Besiedelung der besetzten Gebiete – und macht sich damit an Kriegsverbrechen
mitschuldig. Drohnen mit österreichischen Komponenten schießen in Gaza auf
unbewaffnete Frauen, Männer und Kinder. Während in Gaza ein ganzes Volk verhungert,
herrscht in Salzburg Feststimmung. Von Reinhardts ‚unentbehrlichen Lebensmitteln‘ ist auf
diesen Theaterbühnen keine Spur.
Wir sagen: Es reicht
Die Salzburger Festspiele dürfen nicht zum Ort der Verdrängung werden. Sie müssen das
vielzitierte Erbe ihrer Gründer ernst nehmen – und Stellung beziehen, für einen sofortigen
Waffenstillstand und ein Ende des Völkermords. Deshalb setzen wir heute zum Festakt
der Salzburger Festspiele ein Zeichen für Palästina.
Unsere Forderungen an die österreichische Bundesregierung:
- Sanktionen gegen Israel
Das systematische Aushungern der Bevölkerung in Gaza muss sofort gestoppt werden.
Die österreichische Bundesregierung trägt die politische und moralische Verantwortung,
diese eklatanten Menschenrechtsverletzungen und Kriegsverbrechen klar und
unmissverständlich zu verurteilen. Österreich muss sich mit Nachdruck für das sofortige
Ende aller Kampfhandlungen und die uneingeschränkte Versorgung der Bevölkerung
Gazas mit Lebensmitteln, medizinischer Hilfe und weiteren Hilfsgütern einsetzen. Die
umgehende Öffnung des Grenzübergangs Rafah sowie der sichere Zugang für humanitäre
Organisationen sind unumgänglich. Es kann kein freundschaftliches Verhältnis mit einem
Staat geben, der einen Völkermord begeht. Das ist Mittäterschaft. - Verteidigung der Neutralität Österreichs
Die österreichische Bundesregierung sowie heimische Unternehmen müssen umgehend
alle politischen, wirtschaftlichen und militärischen Verbindungen zu Israel beenden.
Solange Israel schwerste Menschenrechtsverbrechen begeht und das humanitäre
Völkerrecht in Gaza systematisch bricht, ist jede Form der Zusammenarbeit eine aktive
Mitverantwortung. Es muss umgehend sichergestellt werden, dass sämtliche NATOWaffentransporte
durch Österreich gestoppt werden. Die Lieferung österreichischer
Komponenten für israelische Drohnen muss sofort gestoppt werden. Österreich hat sich in
seiner Verfassung der „immerwährenden Neutralität“ verpflichtet. Dieser Auftrag ist kein
Lippenbekenntnis, er muss ernst genommen und durch entschlossenes Handeln
umgesetzt werden. Neutralität heißt: keine Waffen für Krieg, keine Komplizenschaft mit
Völkerrechtsbrechern. - Schluss mit der Verdrehung des Antisemitismusbegriffs
Die historische Mitschuld Österreichs am Holocaust darf nicht als Rechtfertigung für
heutige Verbrechen missbraucht werden. „Nie wieder“ muss für alle Menschen gelten.
Israels Vorgehen in Gaza als das zu bezeichnen, was es ist – Genozid und ethnische
Säuberung -, ist nicht Antisemitismus, sondern moralische Pflicht. Die Erinnerung an
unsere nationalsozialistische Vergangenheit verpflichtet uns dazu, an der Seite der
Unterdrückten zu stehen – in diesem Fall an der Seite des palästinensischen Volkes. - Eine Stimme für Palästina – Für eine klare Positionierung der Salzburger
Festspiele
Die Festspiele verstehen sich 2025 als Ort des künstlerischen Widerstands gegen Krieg
und Unterdrückung – doch zur Gewalt in Gaza schweigen sie. Warum? Diese Leerstelle ist
politisch opportun. Wir fordern das Direktorium auf, palästinensische Stimmen sichtbar zu
machen und der Grausamkeit der Verbrechen in Gaza nicht länger auszuweichen. Kunst
darf nicht nur dort kritisch sein, wo es bequem ist.
Max Reinhardts sah Frieden und Humanität als Kern der Festspiel-Idee. Die Salzburger
Festspiele und die Republik Österreich stehen in der Verantwortung, dieses Erbe zu
bewahren – und ihn gegen gegenwärtiges Unrecht zu verteidigen.

Protest at the Opening of the Salzburg Festival:
Art must not only be critical when it’s convenient

It is time to remind the Salzburg Festival of the ethos of its founders.
Today, on July 26, 2025, as the country’s political and financial elite gather in the
Felsenreitschule to ceremoniously open the festival season, Palestinian children in Gaza
face death by starvation. After almost two years of genozide, Austrian President Alexander
Van der Bellen and the federal government stand by and watch as the Israeli military kills
civilians every day and blocks the delivery of humanitarian aid into Gaza. The keynote
speaker, Anne Applebaum, speaks of “Democracy and Music Festivals” but remains silent
on Israel’s documented attacks on journalists, medics and aid workers. Siemens, one of
the festival’s main sponsors, is involved in infrastructure projects that support the illegal
settlement of occupied territories—making the company complicit in war crimes. Drones
equipped with Austrian-made components are being used in Gaza to fire on unarmed
women, men, and children. While an entire population in Gaza is starving, in Salzburg, the
mood is celebratory. There is no trace of Reinhardt’s “essential necessities” on these
stages.
We say: Enough
The Salzburg Festival must not become a space of willful ignorance. It must take the oftcited
legacy of its founders seriously—and take a stand: for an immediate ceasefire and an
end to genocide. That is why today, during the Salzburg Festival’s official opening, we are
raising our voices for Palestine.
Our Demands to the Austrian Federal Government
1. Sanctions Against Israel
The systematic starvation of Gaza’s population must end immediately. The Austrian
government bears both political and moral responsibility to clearly and unequivocally
condemn these grave human rights violations and war crimes. Austria must urgently
advocate for the immediate end of all combat, and for unrestricted delivery of food,
medical aid, and other essential supplies to the people of Gaza. The Rafah border
crossing must be reopened without delay, and humanitarian organizations must be
guaranteed safe access. There can be no “friendly” relations with a state committing
genocide. That is complicity.
2. Uphold Austria’s Neutrality
The Austrian government and domestic companies must immediately sever all political,
economic, and military ties with Israel. As long as Israel continues to commit severe
human rights abuses and systematically violate international humanitarian law in Gaza,
any form of cooperation represents active complicity. All NATO arms transports through
Austrian territory must be halted at once. The export of Austrian-made components used in
Israeli drones must be stopped immediately. Austria’s constitution enshrines its
commitment to „perpetual neutrality.“ This is not an empty promise—it must be taken
seriously and put into practice through decisive action. Neutrality means: no weapons for
war, no complicity in violations of international law.
3. Stop the Misuse of the Term ‚Antisemitism‘
Austria’s historical responsibility for the Holocaust must not be used to justify present-day
crimes. “Never again” must apply to all people. Calling Israel’s actions in Gaza what they
are—genocide and ethnic cleansing—is not antisemitism, it is a moral obligation.
Remembering our National Socialist past demands that we stand with the oppressed—in
this case, with the Palestinian people.
4. A Voice for Palestine – A Clear Position from the Salzburg Festival
The Salzburg Festival in 2025 claims to be a site of artistic resistance against war and
oppression—yet it remains silent on the violence in Gaza. Why? This silence is politically
convenient. We call on the festival’s leadership to make Palestinian voices visible and to
stop turning away from the brutality of what is happening in Gaza. Art must not only be
critical when it’s comfortable.
Max Reinhardt saw peace and humanity as central to the Festival’s purpose. The Salzburg
Festival—and the Republic of Austria—have a responsibility to preserve that legacy and to
defend it in the face of present-day injustice.
For justice. For peace. For a free Palestine.
